                     A Lockdown Experience

Last year 2020 we all endured two lockdowns. After the first we were experiencing a feeling of relief especially as the weather improved. It was predicted to be really fine and sunny during the middle part of September. So, John and I booked a four-day break at an hotel in Yorkshire.

We arrived after lunch and registered. Room looked good and beds comfortable. As the evening meal with entertainment was hours away, we drove into Ripley for a look see. On return we dressed for dinner and enjoyed a lovely waiter served meal. After we found our way to the theatre where real live dancers, singers and a comic entertained us. Much better than I thought it would be. I was fearful it might be bingo! Altogether a very enjoyable and different evening.

After breakfast next day we visited Fountains Abbey. Lovely sunny day to have a good poke around. We ended the visit eating ice cream on a village green. On arrival back at the hotel John headed for the terrace for a drink and I went up to change for dinner. When I came down to join him, we tried to find a waiter to take my drink order. We couldn’t see any waiters wandering around. There were lots of mutterings from adjacent tables about poor service, slow service, non-service. All of a sudden about ten waiters appeared and stood in a line facing us all. The chief waiter then announced to us that they were closing the hotel then and there and we would all have to leave immediately! Great consternation. Some people got up and headed for their rooms to pack. Lots made frantic phone calls to friends or family trying to find somewhere to stay as their drive home was too far at that time of night. Despite the hotel having prepared sixty/eighty evening meals we were not being offered any food either. John had had several pints by then and was over the limit to drive besides we had booked tickets for a visit to Castle Howard the next day. However, John negotiated an overnight stay and a meal in our room. We left the next morning minus breakfast. The upside of this fiasco is that we had a two night break for nothing as we got a full refund.
