Listed Buildings In Helmdon, Astwell & Falcutt

The parish of Helmdon contains many old buildings and houses of interest, some, like the church, dating back more than 700 years to the 14th century.

Below are details of the listed buildings and Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) in the parish, including architectural features of interest, any known history and a description of the building styles.

The list is not necessarily exhaustive, and there are many old buildings of interest in the parish that are not listed buildings. In addition, the descriptions given are a snapshot in time (approx. 1980s) and some features may now have been altered or removed altogether.

For more about listed buildings please visit the English Heritage web site.

The fortified manor house to which the existing gatehouse belonged was probably built by Thomas Lovett who exchanged the manors of Rushton and Great Oakley for those of Falcutt and Astwell in 1471. The daughter of the last Thomas Lovett of Astwell married Francis Shirley and their son George Shirley demolished most of the medieval manor house and built a new house beside the gatehouse, completed in 1606. The property was sold to Earl Temple of Stowe in 1763 when Astwell became a tenant farm and a large part of the house was demolished. In 1958 the building was restored for Mrs Joan Wake.
