Summer Fete Result Higher Than In 2017- posted 04 July 2018 This year's church fete again had the benefit of being held on a lovely sunny day and it is pleasing to report that it raised £2635.11, exceeding last year’s total of approx.£2,433. Again, many thanks to all who helped - the tent erectors, the stallholders, the helpers, the people who provided goods and refreshments and, of course, all who attended and made it such a success. Also a very special mention to those who trawled the village with raffle tickets before the day, and to Mary Nash who had had a plant stall outside her house. The three main prizes in the raffle were won by Tim Buxton (Silverstone tickets), Fiona Kirkham (£50 voucher), and Kathy Quiney and Margaret Riley (half a load of wood each). As all of you are aware, Radstone’s bat population has now escalated to such a degree, that due to what they “leave behind” it is not possible to hold services in our beautiful church. I have been in contact with Bats in Churches project since March 2015.After completing numerous surveys to determine who needs help, it is finally, hopefully coming our way. We met with Ecologists in July for them to assess the impact bats are having, and to date St Lawrence is the worst by far they have seen!
The project will provide help and support to places of worship where bats are having a negative impact on historic fabric and the use of the building for worship and community activities. They aim to demonstrate practical solutions to reduce the impact of the bats without impacting the bat colonies involved. Evidence suggests that most pre-16th century churches are used by bats to varying degrees. This is particularly problematic in rural areas where there are few public spaces and a church is the hub for the community. Loss of woodland and barn conversions have added to the pressure on medieval churches as the only available roost sites.
The project will allow suitably trained and experienced ecologists to use recently tested and effective management techniques, such as ultrasonic deterrents and the “boxing in” of roosts, to limit the impact of the bats. It also aims to deliver and test solutions for those churches most at risk, which in turn will then showcase a new approach to the conservation and management of bats in churches for the wider community of churches to follow. The project aims to leave a lasting legacy with tested solutions, resources to help churches and other historic buildings, experienced, skilled and trained volunteer specialists and consultants and an on-going national church bat survey.

To the Parishioners of the Astwell Benefice from your PCCs.
Faced with what is proving to be an almost impossible task on their own, our PCCs have decided to join together to trial a new and innovative way of working.
In doing so, we hope we do so with God’s blessing and in the hope that we are blazing a new trail that other rural churches can follow.
For some years now rural parishes throughout the country have been struggling and we here in the Astwell Benefice are no exception to this. We, here in the Astwell Benefice, have found ourselves way off meeting all our Parish’s financial commitments and are unable to find all the officers we need to serve on our parish-based Parochial Church Councils (PCCs).
Traditionally, along with the Rector and Churchwardens, Parochial Church Councils throughout the country have been given the legal responsibility, not only for overseeing the raising of income that pays both for the maintenance and repair of our ancient Church buildings, but also ensuring that ministry continues across our Parishes.
And it has to be said that the fact our Church buildings are maintained to such a high standard is in no small part down to the tireless extra work undertaken by our “Friends Groups” in some of our parishes and the ability of some Parishes to draw on Fabric specific Trusts and Funds. These Friends and Trusts represent those in our parishes who care deeply about our Church buildings and they have played a crucial role in allowing our PCCs to be successful in this area of their responsibility and have our grateful thanks.
However, our PCCs are also required to pay for the Ministry in this Benefice. This provides regular parish–based services, Weddings, Baptisms, our Funeral ministry, our work in our schools and in our wider communities. This cost also includes the legal cover required to keep our Churches as historic public buildings and all the State legalities involved in marriage and burial. These costs are paid via a “Benefice Share”.
This Benefice Share (a sort of Church council tax) is paid yearly to the Diocese and this cost has traditionally been divided out between the parishes, who are then required to meet a “Parish Share” themselves. These individual “Shares” are then combined at Diocesan level.
Here in the Astwell Benefice, with one priest, we pay one of the lower “bands” of Benefice Share, but we are still required to find £56,000 per annum and, at the moment, even dividing it up, we are unable to pay this in full.
It has therefore been decided that while it is clear that our buildings can be cared for at Parish level, the costs of our Ministry needs to be more of a Benefice-wide responsibility.
And so, over the next three years the Astwell Benefice will embark on a trial, that will see the maintenance and running costs associated with our Church buildings remain the responsibility of individual parishes, while the Ministry and Mission and its associated costs will now become the responsibility of a Joint Benefice PCC.
This three year Trial has come out of six months of consultation and considered debate on how we might move forward. It is based on strong Christian principles of support and nurture and a desire to further God’s Kingdom here in the Astwell Benefice.
This Trial has been completely endorsed by the Diocesan Secretariat and by the Archdeacon of Northampton, who claim this as an “exceptional proposal of depth and thought” and a blueprint for future work in the Diocese.
Yet at Parish level little, if anything will change.
The income that is raised each year through collections, regular giving, generous donations and fund raising will be allocated in the same way it always has, and will still be paid into the Parish. The income will continue to pay for: The costs of heating and lighting and insuring the building to allow it to remain open to the public as well as any maintenance and repairs of the building itself. And, as before, any remaining income will go to pay the Parish’s Ministry costs, through the Share payments.
But under this three-year Trial, instead of the buildings being maintained by a parish- based PCC with other responsibilities as in the past, they will now be overseen by a newly formed group – the “Fabric Committee”. This Committee will, as the PCC has done in the past, continue to operate with the help of existing Friends Groups or funds ring-fenced for repairs and maintenance. But it is hoped as this group has a focused remit, they can concentrate on maintaining the Church Building as a community asset.
Under the new Trial, the income raised by the parishes towards the Benefice Share will be managed by the new “Benefice Parochial Church Council” (BPCC), which will be responsible for Mission and Ministry across the Parishes. This BPCC will be made up of a representative from every Parish elected by their electoral role as well as a Churchwarden from Helmdon, Lois Weedon, Syresham and Wappenham and will require just one set of officers.
The income raise in and by the parishes towards their share will now be combined together and managed by the BPCC who will supplement this parish income with funds raised from Benefice -wide events. This prevents any one Parish “failing to pay” their ministry and mission costs.
This BPCC will do its work through Committees with remits for such matters as Worship, Finance, Social and Fundraising. Anyone with an interest in the subject matter of these Committees, whether a regular churchgoer or not will be welcomed on board.
We plan to start the 3-year Trial in January 2018.
It is important to stress that this a “Trial”, there will be no legal changes, instead there will be flexibility all the way along, as we embark on this Trial to make changes and additions to make sure this works for us. There is also the ability for any Parish to leave the Trial if they find it is not working for them

It is a new way, but it is one that comes with the blessing of the Diocese and all our PCCs. (There were no votes against this proposed Trial from any of our PCC members). Therefore, we hope, you will give this venture both your support and your prayers as we journey together.

Wimbledon Men's Singles Final Live On Screen - posted 02 July 2017 Wedding Fair A Great Success - posted 30 June 2017 An extract from Pew News A huge ‘Thank You’ to everyone who helped to make our Wedding Weekend such a great success. Over the weekend over 350 people came through the doors of our Churches, plus we got to catch up with some newly and not-so newly-weds at our ‘Celebration of Marriage Services’ on Sunday. The Wedding Fair was originally planned as an outreach to brides and grooms and we have had one booking already, plus a lot of interest as well as more than six potential wedding blessings for couples who didn’t know they could have been married in Church. They do now!! But we also had an unexpected response, a surprise to us, but clearly not for God. We reached out into and inspired all our communities. Everyone went above and beyond to share in the weekend with us. People went up into attics and under beds to seek out their wedding dresses and bring them along with their wedding albums Our flower arrangers provided us with simply fabulous and thoughtfully presented arrangements. And then there were the “extras”- from T shirts politely suggesting a Church Wedding to information boards; flower arranging albums and even shoes and hats. The enthusiasm, hard work and vision of the organisers across the Benefice along with their army of supporters, has been aweinspiring and much appreciated by all those who came through the doors of our churches. Chatting to these people across the Benefice, I’ve been told just how special our Churches are, not just for their beauty, but for the communities who worship in them. I have also had offers of more local wedding dresses for next time, along with other ideas such as a mass "Can I still fit into my wedding dress?” challenge. I know I’ve said this before – we may be small, but with God’s help and our own enthusiasm for his work, we are mighty!! The Bat Situation In Radstone Church & The Outcome Of The Bid To The Heritage Lottery Fund - posted 20 March 2017 Due to the “take over” of the church by bats and the 75mm of dung and resulting health issues the Archdeacon of Northampton has recommended that the church is not used until a solution is found. Natural England has submitted a bid to the Lottery Fund, which has been successful to investigate and hopefully find a solution to the issue. The first phase is a study into the issues lasting 13 months (2018) and Radstone church will be included in this phase. The second phase lasting 5 years is a delivery phase where solutions are implemented to determine their effectiveness. This should be completed by 2023 but hopefully Radstone church should be useable before this date. Outcome of the Bats in Churches bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund
We last wrote to you in November 2016 to let you know we had successfully submitted a new bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a national Bats in Churches project
The Heritage Lottery Fund have now assessed the application (which will include Radstone church) and we are very pleased to announce that we have been successful! HLF have agreed to fund the development phase of the project.
This is such a fantastic outcome for people and communities, church buildings and bats and we are looking forward to getting the project underway. We will be putting out a press release very soon but as stakeholders in this issue, we wanted you to be the first to know. Eventually there will be a dedicated project website but in the meantime, we will keep the interim project website updated with the latest information: http://www.batsandchurches.org.uk/latest-developments/
The entire project will run in two phases: a 13 month development phase completing in March 2018 followed by a five-year delivery phase running until 2023. This result means we can now start work on the development phase of the project.
We will be in touch again in the near future to give you updates on how the project is progressing.

A project to refresh and update the list of memorial inscriptions in the village has been completed.
Every headstone in the churchyard at St Mary Magdalene, Helmdon has been recorded and the information put online. The old part of the churchyard was first recorded in 1997/98 but now this work has been updated to include all the burials in the past twenty years. A new plan has been made of the churchyard to show the location of the headstones. The project has been a labour of love and has taken many, many hours of painstaking work, both in looking at old headstones and in going through the archive records matching names and dates. It is now a wonderful local history and genealogical resource.

The Church Fete takes place this Saturday 2nd July..............and as usual we will be manning the bottle stall. Last year we made a little over £100 for the Church, and we sold out very early on in the afternoon.
As it stands at the moment we only have 15 bottles for the stall...............so we need bottles in bottle bags dropped off to Sue Lidgley by this Friday lunchtime so we can run a worthwhile stall. Her address is 11 Shortlands Close, if Sue is not in the bags / contents can be left in her covered porch.
Any bottle is welcome whether it is wine, Prosecco, spirits (full size or miniatures), shampoo, bubble bath, olive oil, cans of lager, orange juice, lemonade etc etc

All our prayers were answered and after a very wet morning the sun shone for the 4pm wedding of Rev. Carole Peters soon to become Rev. Carole Peters - King.
Then we waited in anticipation for the entrance of the bride. True to tradition Carole arrived 10 minutes late. When she came into view we could all see how lovely she looked. She walked down the aisle alone as she has no relatives. When it came to giving her away, everyone in the Benefice shouted 'we do'.

Excellent Result From Church Fete- posted 08 July 2015 The Church Fete on Saturday 27 June in the grounds of Manor Farm was much enjoyed by all. A big thank you to all those who helped put up the tents, brought goods, provided refreshments, manned the stalls and games, came to participate – in fact to all those who in any way contributed to making it such a success. Each month Village Praise & Prayer is conducted by a village organisation and to date, amongst others, the Bellringers, the Helmdon Fellowship, the Acorns, the WI, the Women’s Club and the Helmdon Fellowship have led the service to great effect. Last Sunday, 2nd November, it was the turn of The Stitchers, a group who meet in the village once a month. During the service members Mary Nash, Margaret Reardon and Jean Brookhouse did readings and Jenny Overson, founder leader, recounted the group's history which goes back many years, having been started because of the need for church kneelers which today are proudly in use in all the pews. Today most of the work such as knitted Easter chicks, Father Christmas and Christmas Pudding decorations, goes to Katherine House Hospice to be sold in aid of funds, although there was a period in 2011 when woollen helmet inserts were made in quantity and sent to the troops in Afghanistan.
Result of Table Top Sale - posted 24 October 2014 Many thanks to all those who supported the Table Top Sale on Saturday 18th October in the Reading Room by having a table or helping with raffle, refreshments and furniture moving! A profit of £387.50 was made, which will go towards the Church Decorating Fund. Presentation Of The John Coales Memorial Chalice - posted 08 October 2014 On Sunday 12th October there will be a service at 10 a.m. in the church during which the John Coales Memorial Chalice will be presented to the Parochial Church Council. This award is given by the Francis Coales Charitable Trust in recognition of the hard work done to keep the church in good order. Many organisations and individuals in the village have helped to raise funds for this work and we hope everyone will come along and join us for this special occasion. The fund raising for church redecoration is going well thanks to the generosity and hard work of so many people. We are so pleased the path to church is done and the interior decorated. It will all be really smart when the bishop comes for the presentation of the chalice we have won on October 12th. Fund raising is never ending when you are looking after an historic listed building and the next fundraiser will be a table top sale on Saturday 18 October which Vanessa Vicars is organising (details later). About 30 people met at the war memorial at 11-30 a.m today, to lay wreaths, and remember the fallen of WW1. A short service was conducted by The Reverend Carole Peters, and was attended by two members of The British Legion.

Thank you to all those who contributed to the stalls and the raffle and helped on the day, and above all those thank you to all who came – without you the fete would not have been such a success. Of this Helmdon’s collection was £1028.14. A big vote of thanks is offered to all who gave so generously to such a good cause. Ann Smith (01295) 760684 The Northampton Hope Centre helps the local street homeless. It looks after over 100 people every day in the day centre at Oasis House, and is as much about giving people a hand-up as well as a hand-out. It is entirely reliant upon the support and generosity of the local community - individuals, schools, churches/faith groups, sports and social clubs and local businesses, to keep their range of services available to those who really need them. We used the same service as other years and were very lucky with the weather. We held the service in the barn with a lovely view over the countryside with sheep and lambs looking at us and occasionally joining in with a baa.
Three tractors were just outside, a very modern one and two vintage ones with a plough. At one point in the service all who had a connection with farming stood round while Carole blessed the plough and threw holy water over it, then she sprinkled holy water on those who were near enough.
About 150 people attended the service and then about 130 stayed on for the pig roast and puddings.
£455 was raised for RABI to help farmers affected by the floods and £405 profit was made towards decorating the interior of the church.
Many thanks to all who attended and a special thanks to Mervyn and Liz Humphrey who invited us to Falcutt Hall and prepared the barn for us. Very Successful Antiques & Valuation Day - posted 03 May 2014 Over 70 people attended this event and it was a sell-out.
Unfortunately Charles Hanson was unable to come as his wife had to have an emergency caesarean operation that day. He sent John Keightly instead, who is a member of Hanson’s team. During lunchtime we had a text message to say Rebecca had given birth to a daughter and all was well. This news was greeted with loud applause.
John did a great job valuing each person's antique item and also gave us an informative talk and showed us some of his own collectables. He did really well as he had to come at such short notice.
Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and the general comment was that it had been a very enjoyable social day. A dozen people went away extra happy having won one of the lovely raffle prizes.
Many thanks to all who came on the day and a very big 'Thank you' to all of the wonderful helpers.

On the first Friday morning of each month half a dozen of us have for some years been gathering in the church at eight in the morning to share a short service of prayers, a psalm and other Bible passages. The leader for the day adds prayers as she thinks important for the world’s needs, or our community’s, or any individuals’. It is a quiet and supportive occasion, and anyone would be very welcome indeed to join us, either as a visitor or for a difficult season, whether or not attendance becomes a habit. On February 7th we shall be praying particularly for Northampton Women’s Aid, on the day when a presentation is to be made to the County Council for funding for their work to protect the vulnerable from abuse at home. But we shall not meet at 8 am in March because in the afternoon there will be the Women’s Aid Day of Prayer at 2 p.m. in Helmdon church. Remembrance Service For American Servicemen - posted 26 October 2013 As many of you may know an American plane crashed near Astwell Castle on the 30th November 1943 unfortunately killing all 10 American Servicemen, the youngest 20 and the eldest 31.
We are holding a 70th Remembrance Service in church at 11am on Saturday 2nd November, and some American personnel from the US Air Force Base at Croughton will be present. Everyone is very welcome to attend and please wear medals if you have them.

Firstly I would like to thank everyone who helped with the decorating to make the church look lovely. The Helmdon Clangers took part in the service.
The bring and share supper was very well supported, and the sale of the produce and collection made a total of £620 for the Planting Promise Project in Sierra Leone which Jess Quiney is involved with, so overall a very successful evening and thank you once again to everyone who provided the produce and supported the cause. With regret this event is postponed. Charles Hanson has to have an operation on Thursday, stay in hospital for a week and then have follow up visits there. The Proms Night in Church on Saturday was a great success. We started off with a lovely Pork Supper which everyone enjoyed, followed by various puddings.
Then we all sat down and watched the Proms live and joined in with the singing of Land of Hope and Glory etc., all of us waving our flags.
We would like to thank Ann for cooking the pork, Vanessa for running the raffle, Alex for serving the drinks, David and Soul for setting up the equipment and all who helped in many ways. Also, of course, thank you to everyone who attended to make the evening a great success. The profit was £650. Thank you again. We welcomed our new Rector Carole Peters at her Institution and Induction Service on Thursday 18th July. There were around 200 in the congregation - it was a lovely service with various people actually taking part from the 6 parishes. We then had a lovely selection of food with Pimms, soft drinks and tea to drink. Although it was a lovely warm evening we were pleased to have the food under marquees kindly provided by John Coatsworth. About 70 of Carole's friends came from her previous parishes and they really enjoyed the occasion. They were all very friendly and want to come to some of our services and we were asked to attend some of theirs. On behalf of everyone I would like to thank Andrew and Emma Pitts for letting us put the marquees on their lawn, George and Jane Beyts for the parking facilities and everyone who helped on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in setting everything up and clearing up and to everyone who provided the food and Alex Corrin for serving Pimms. It was a lovely evening enjoyed by all and the weather was perfect. Good news! - The Revd Carole Peters has accepted the Bishop’s invitation to be Rector of the Astwell Group of Parishes. Subject to the normal Church of England legal and administrative procedures, she will be Instituted by the Bishop of Peterborough The Rt Revd Donald Allister and Installed by the Archdeacon of Northampton The Ven. Christine Allsopp on Thursday 18 July. Before her ordination Carole was a television producer/director and author with over 20 years experience of making television documentaries and entertainment series. She enjoys cooking, gardening and walking her two lively collie dogs. We look forward to welcoming Carole to our Benefice this summer – she will live in the church house at Lois Weedon. Church News - posted 17 November 2012 Since Will Adams’ Retirement as a Rector earlier in the summer, we are still waiting for a replacement. The position was advertised but unfortunately there were no applicants so this will be re-advertised shortly. Some of you may be aware that we have been trying to raise funds for repairs to the church roof after a theft earlier this year – the amount of insurance paid out on roof claims does not cover our costs. We have therefore installed a roof alarm system and have been very fortunate to have received a donation to cover the cost of the alarm, which has helped enormously and we are very grateful. There are further funds needed for the roof repairs through events etc. so if anyone can offer any suggestions/ideas or help in any way please let us know. The Church hosted a splendid and successful evening on Saturday 8 September, raising upwards of £830. It was the occasion of The Last Night Of The Proms screened in the Church, accompanied by a delicious pig roast supper. The splendid violinist Nicola Benedetti reduced the participants, still eating their supper, to a hush, and from then on the audience fully enjoyed the concert which also contained solos from the fine Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja. The second half of the concert featured the traditional music of the last prom of the year that we know and love such as the Fantasia on British Sea Songs and Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March. Flags have been in constant use this year what with the Jubilee, the Olympics and the Paralympics, and they were waved with great enthusiasm as the Last Night of the Proms drew to a close with Parry’s Jerusalem, finishing with God Save the Queen sung by Katherine Jenkins. Thank you to all who helped with the delicious supper, carved the pig roast, served the drinks, coped with the TV equipment and supported this very successful event.
