Prizes for those who recycle food

Restaurant vouchers, family days out and theatre tickets are among some of the prizes that can be won by South Northamptonshire residents who have signed up to the ‘I’m in to win’ food recycling initiative.

At the beginning of the year South Northampton Council (SNC) joined forces with other district councils in the Northants Waste Partnership to launch the initiative which rewards households for recycling their food waste.

Prizes are being awarded every month to households in the districts taking part.

Cllr Dermot Bambridge, SNC’s portfolio holder for environmental services said: “Every household in the district can enter the prize draw.

“All they have to do is sign up on the website, and they’ll receive a welcome pack with a sticker to put on their outdoor silver caddy. Then they just have to recycle their food and put the caddy out every week.

“Our residents are good at recycling their food, taking food out of landfill where it produces methane gas which is 25 times more damaging to the environment than carbon dioxide.”

To enter the monthly prize draw householders should visit www.feedyourcaddy.co.uk/ and click on ‘sign up now.’

Those who regularly recycle their waste food are entered in to the prize draw and if their name is selected they can choose from a wide variety of prizes provided by local businesses.

For information on what can and cannot go into your food caddy visit www.southnorthants.gov.uk/foodwaste.htm

SNC Recycling Officers will be at the Towcester Farmers’ Market on Friday, 14 October between 9am and 1.30pm to sign up people to ‘I’m in to win’ and answer questions about food waste and recycling.

Throughout October SNC will be sharing hints and tips on Facebook and Twitter to help residents reduce their food waste and tell them more about what happens to their food after it is collected.
