Carnival Capers
Colourful costumes on carnival floats led the way to
this year's summer event in Helmdon.
The 21st Helmdon Carnival on Monday was a packed day of family
fun, featuring quad bikes, vintage ploughing, Punch and Judy
and Morris dancing.
Skydiving demonstrations by a display team from Hinton Airfield,
a martial arts display, majorettes and pony rides were also
part of the lively programme.
Karen Valentine, secretary of Helmdon Carnival Committee,
said: "The weather was fine and it was absolutely fantastic.
People were in such good spirits we even held an impromptu
tug o' war at the end which was great fun."
Helmdon School won the prize for the best float, with their
depiction of Victorian schooldays. It was part of the procession
which led the way to the playing fields where the action took
place.
Accrington Stanley played at the Carnival Dance on Saturday
night, attracting 300 people, while on Sunday afternoon, Porterhouse
Jazz Group entertained as preludes to the main event. Mrs
Valentine said: "This year went very well and we hope
that the weekend raised as much as last year, which would
be great for the village and great for the community."
Cash raised will be divided among various village groups,
with the Brackley Cottage Hospital receiving the largest share.
The event last year raised around £4,000.
