HELMDON’S CHILDREN HAVE GREENER FINGERS THAN MOST
Children at Helmdon Acorns Pre-School are celebrating this week as they were announced the best young potato growers in the area beating competition from 18 other schools.
Not only did they produce the highest yield but they were also the youngest (two-to-four-year-olds) contenders in the competition. For four years the plants team at Buckingham Garden Centre has been encouraging local school children to grow their on vegetables, and set a challenge to all primary and pre-schools in the area to get the children growing potatoes in bags.
The garden centre provided the necessary materials the children needed to win a £50 gift (token) given to the winning school producing the heaviest yield and the pre-school produced the heaviest crop of potatoes from one 30 cm, 17 litre bag weighing a staggering 1.3 kg.
Some of the potatoes were eaten, others were used for potato printing.
