HELPING TO GET HELMDON ALL STITCHED UP
A stitch in time… or millions of them at Sulgrave Manor … could help boost tourist income, especially from America, for the district.
With that in mind SNC is helping sponsor design of new ‘Elizabethan’ embroideries at the ancestral home of George Washington, first president of the United States.
The project involves over a thousand small panels – stitched by local volunteers, together with other around the country, and even some in America, who are working to professional designs – being put together on a velvet backing, to form curtains and a counterpane for a 16th century canopied bed at the manor.
Their work will replace a 1920’s silk-based refurbishment which is now long past its est.
For co-ordinator, Jenny Overson of Helmdon, who also works as a tour guide at the manor, the project is a labour of love … and a long one at that. “We’re hoping to unveil the completed work in 2003 – that will mark the 400th anniversary of the death of Queen Elizabeth I and the 50th anniversary of the crowning of the current Queen Elizabeth.
