BOB ALWAYS GAVE A FIRST-CLASS SERVICE
First class … that is what Helmdon folk think of the service given by their regular postman, Mr Bob Salmon.
Bob has retired after 37 years based at Brackley Post Office, but not before he was handed a very special envelope of his own from those villagers of Helmdon, and its hamlets, Astwell and Falcutt.
Ever since most can remember, Bob has delivered the mail and done his bit for the community and last Thursday at the Reading Room, they showed their appreciation by handing over a cheque for £116 together with a bouquet of flowers for his wife Pat.
Said Mrs Susan Lidgley who, with Mrs Edith Shellard, made the presentation: “Bob has been much more than a postman, he’s been a character.
“When he came with the letters he’d often look after our outgoing mail as well, saving us a visit to the postbox. He cared about what he did and was always ready to do a good turn or have a bit of a chat.”
Four collectors, Mrs Lidgley, Mrs Shellard, Judy Cairns and Margaret Colgate gathered donations for the £118 cheque, but Mr Salmon’s ‘patch’ went further than that.
He was a familiar figure in Syresham, Biddlesden, Whitfield and also in the town around Brackley.
He was told nothing about the presentation. Mr Peter Lidgley picked him up together with his wife from their Brackley home at 4, Brackley Croft, Bob having simply being told to keep the evening free.
A social member of the Brackley Bowling Club and Brackley Town Football Club, Bob will spend much of his retirement tackling do-it-yourself projects and gardening.
