MOVE over Notting Hill – for local folk at Helmdon showed country folk can carnival as well as any one.
Fun and games steeped in a medieval mood were the order of the day on Bank Holiday Monday at the popular Helmdon Carnival.
Young farmer David Austin, six, from Helmdon, was led by piped piper, Ami Barnes, seven, during the opening carnival float procession, which, with the help of the Knights of Warwick, transported them back to the medieval ages.
Green-fingered Jack Ayres, 81, of Brackley Road, Helmdon, was over the moon with his winning floral arrangement, made up of flowers grown in his own back garden.
And not only did Jack walk away with this first prize, but he also won nine other vegetable and flower categories, as well as coming runner-up in several others.
And daughter Doreen England showed she was following in her father’s footsteps by winning first prize for home produce.
As the sun shone other carnival goers flexed their muscles in the inter-village tug-of-war, while others tried their hands at longbow shooting and the kiddies used up their energy on quad bikes, bouncy castles and swing boats.
