Ofsted Praise for School Standards
Helmdon Primary School has been praised for its effectiveness
and strengths in an Ofsted report.
Inspectors visited the school earlier this year and found
pupils reached high standards by the time they left.
Standards were particularly high in English, maths and
science due to a "good quality" of teaching.
The report highlighted pupils' good behaviour and stated
they were interested in their work. The headteacher, governors
and staff worked together effectively, they said.
The school has 124 pupils between the ages of four and
eleven.
But the Ofsted report also pointed out standards of work
and progress made by children in the foundation stage could
be improved, along with some unfavourable views raised by
parents, such as the amount of homework set and the range
of activities outside lessons.
Sue Blackburn, headteacher of the school said: "We
have made substantial improvements since the last inspection
in 1997.
"We are pleased to see the inspectors recognise we
are not complacent and have a strong commitment to continuing
to raise standards and the quality of teaching and learning."
An action plan has now been drawn up to tackle weaknesses
at the school.
