Wetter Than a Fish's Wet Bits - 5 September 2015

The 6th Helmdon Hurler was run on Monday 31 August 2015 and this year's August Bank Holiday stood true to form and it rained cats and dogs. This however did not deter 112 eager runners who completed the 6th Helmdon Hurler.

As usual the event attracted wide-ranging abilities and age groups, which was pleasing to see. Central to the event is the village pub 'The Bell Inn' who supported the event with a BBQ and a selection of good beers afterwards, not to mention a dry and warm bar.

The profits from the BBQ and race entries will be donated to support village groups - initial indications are good.

Records were broken with 5 seconds shaved off the winning time: Paddy Haynes crossed the finish line in a fantastic 23 minutes and 53 seconds as the winning male, Miriam Prewett finished as the first female in 30 minutes 20 seconds.

By far the most impressive result was achieved by the first under 18's, Skip Snelson, who finished in 28 minutes and 46 seconds in 20th position. Skip is only 12 years old so this shocked the race organisers! I think there is more to come from him.

There were 10 runners who completed the course in less than 27 minutes earning themselves a place on the Sub 27 min Hurler Hero list (on the 2016 event T shirt).

The feedback from the event is positive with many commenting on the traditional village feel to event and supportive comments of how friendly the event is. The race organisers would really like to thank all sponsors and marshals, without whom the event would not take place. Also thanks to all of the villagers who supported the runners as they ran past their front doors. Finally we would like to thank all those that took part. Without them braving the wind and rain this event would not be what it is.

We hope that the 2016 bank holiday will bring better weather and that we see more and more runners taking part and supporting this not for profit village event.

Eddie O'Gorman Pips his Own Record - posted 3 September 2013

Helmdon Hurler 2013
The 2013 Helmdon Hurler sets off up Church Street.

This year’s event attracted 131 Entrants including 2 “no shows”, the second highest turn out and 129 Runners.

The weather on the day promised perfect conditions for the event - cloud cover during the morning with clear warm weather in the afternoon.

The Race got off to a fast start but the hill from the Bell to the Church soon spread the field. The sun broke through during the race but the pace did not slacken and the winner Eddie O’Gorman finished 23min 58secs beating the Race and his own record set last year by a second.

The quality of the Runners was reflected in the fact that 90 of the 129 finishers completed the course inside 40 minutes.

The event ran smoothly and as before the many out-of-village Runners commented on the unique atmosphere of the event and the warmth and enthusiasm of the Marshals and supporters around the course.

Entrants, organisers and spectators supported the presentations and stayed around to take advantage of the BBQ and the “unique” atmosphere of the Bell.

Congratulations to the Runners and many thanks to everyone who helped support the event.

The Record Stands - Just - posted 4 September 2011

Ready for the off - the inaugural Helmdon Hurler gets underway.
And they're off - with Simon Woodward (No. 35) leading from the front.

The Hurler record of 24 minutes 53 seconds set during the inaugural Hurler in 2010 remains intact, but only just. Helmdon's very own Simon Woodward went two places better than last year to win the 2011 Hurler in 25 minutes 10 seconds.

The 2011 Hurler, which took place on bank holiday Monday 28 August 2011, attracted 128 entrants (up 30% on last year) and there was a good mixture of young and old, serious athletes and fun runners. The eldest competitor was 79 year old John Fowler and the youngest was 5 year old Jasmine Bailey, the two of them running together.

The conditions for the 4.3 mile race were good; dry, cool and breezy. The course starts and finishes at the Bell pub in Helmdon and takes runners on an undulating course with some long and demanding inclines.

The winning female was Meredith Cox in an impressive 30 minutes 1 second, surely making her a certain favourite for future races too.

The race organisation was superb with everything running like clockwork. Organisers David Bailey, Brian Austin and Bob Lenton were ably assisted by an army of volunteer marshalls, timekeepers and helpers and the Bell played host to a post-race BBQ.

All the proceeds from the day will be donated to village groups and organisations. The 2011 event was sponsored by The Bell Inn, HB Gardens, Heygates Ltd, Humphrey Livestock, On Tap Helmdon and SP Valentine.

Top 3 male finishers were:
Simon Woodward in 25 minutes 9 seconds
Matthew Clarke in 25 minutes 26 seconds
Shaun O’Gorman in 26 minutes 18 seconds

Top 3 females were:
Meredith Cox in 30 minutes 1 second
Lindsay Judge in 30 minutes 21 seconds
Zoe Gulliver in 31 minutes 14 seconds

Top 3 Under 18’s were:
Tom Biegel in 26 minutes 48 seconds
Elvie Cox in 31 minutes 4 seconds
Toby Steele in 32 minutes 18 seconds

2010 Helmdon Hurler Exceeds All Expectations
- posted 27 September 2010

Ready for the off - the inaugural Helmdon Hurler gets underway.
Ready for the off - the inaugural Helmdon Hurler gets underway.

95 runners tackled the challenge head on as they competed in the first ever “Helmdon Hurler” on 30 August. The 4.3 mile undulating course around the “Astwell Track” attracted entrants from local villages and running clubs alike with the winner Daniel Peabody completing the course in an impressive 24 minutes and 53 seconds. Helmdon’s very own Simon Woodward finished in third place with a time of 25 minutes and 7 seconds. Maybe Simon can win the race next year?

The race started and finished at the Bell Inn, Helmdon and it seems that a combination of the good weather, the smell of the BBQ and the temptation of a well earned drink encouraged most of the runners to stay behind and soak up the friendly atmosphere of the event. The organisers would like to thank Bloomers Florist, Support Logistics, The Bell Inn and HB Gardens for kindly sponsoring the event. A special thanks also goes to all the volunteers who helped out on the day. Donations will be made to several village groups over the next few weeks.
