Using this resource
This is a complete listing of all the memorial inscriptions found at the church and around the village, which is updated regularly. AT THE END there is also a plan of the churchyard made in 2021 which shows the location of the various gravestones.

The graveyard inscriptions have been matched with the most appropriate entry from the parish burial records but there is no guarantee that these are correct.

Many stones are badly weathered and this, in addition to difficult ancient handwriting, causes some discrepancies in date, etc. Until 1751 records were kept with the year commencing on Lady Day, the 25th March until the following 24th March, so in some cases dates seem a year out. As with all transcriptions those of particular interest should be checked with the original documents but we hope that this work has made that job easier.

The inscriptions were first recorded by members of Helmdon WEA in the years 1997 & 1998, and published in 2000, with WEA members and others living in the village involved. Valerie Moir, Audrey Forgham, Judith Cairns, June Drew, Ian Drew, Gerald Holt, Liz Woolley, Conrad Woolley, Ross Vicars and Jean Spendlove worked on transcribing the gravestones. June Drew's illustrations have added great interest to this work. The typing and checking was done by Sue Wadeson, Valerie Moir and Stewart Moir, and thanks are also due to Reg Batchelor for help in finding unknown graves and Celia Terrey for help with parish registers.

In 2016 the project was updated and since the church path had changed position, it was felt this was the time to renumber the rows. Judy Cairns did the bulk of this work and Conrad Woolley checked the new rows. Bill Elkington made a new map and Audrey Forgham typed the new work and prepared it for the website.

May 2021 There is a list of about cremations at the end of this project, under the illustrations.

(Opened 1842, Closed 2004, and later demolished for structural reasons. A private house is now in its place)

Note from Rosemary Gulliver: When excavating the builder found bodies, I think in all a total of 8 bodies were found but we only know the name of three the Hedges family. After observing the necessary rules and regulations the bodies were exhumed, the remains placed in one coffin and re-interred at The Baptist Garden of Rest in Woodend along with the headstone. The memorial plaques from Helmdon were given back to families where possible, some couldn't be removed as they had eroded. I believe two of them relating to the Sunday school and chapel in general have been incorporated into the new house.

The following epitaphs are recorded in, 1, Baker's History & Antiquities of Northampton, & 2&3 in The Things We Could Tell You About Helmdon, published by Helmdon Women's Club in 1993.

1. Altar tomb probably the ivy covered tomb nearest the Church Tower Arms three bears, heads muzzled erased (G), in chief three torteauxes.

BARKER. Here lyeth the body of Sir RICHARD BARKER KNT. who died in the 64th year of his age, and the first day of April, and on the eighth day was interred here in obedience to his command 1686.

(The tradition of the village is that he went up to London a poor lad, and amassing a considerable fortune in trade, desired to be buried in his native village)
